New Touchstones of Hope Curriculum
The Reconciliation in Child Welfare: Touchstones of Hope movement is proud to announce the release of two new education packages designed to translate the touchstone principles into action:
Touchstones of Hope: Youth Curriculum
Written by two Aboriginal youth, this 2-day workshop is intended for Indigenous and non-Indigenous young people between the ages of 15 to 29. It prepares young people to facilitate reconciliation gatherings in their organizations and communities, encourages youth to develop leadership skills to help improve the health of their organizations and communities, and creates dialogue around issues of concern in child welfare, including how to use the Touchstones to improve the child welfare system.
Curriculum samples:
- Module 1: Exploring the Lives of Indigenous Children and Youth in Child Welfare
- Module 2: Leading the Way Forward in Reconciliation
Touchstones of Hope: Leadership Curriculum
This training package, designed to be used by community leaders and children's services agencies, was developed by First Nations researcher and curriculum writer Dr. Margaret Kovach. The two day curriculum package takes participants through each of the touchstone principles so that they have an opportunity to interpret them locally and develop implementation plans. FNCFCS and the other Reconciliation in Child Welfare partners are currently pursuing funding options to make this training program available across the country. In the interim, this leadership training will be provided on a cost recovery basis to interested communities.
Curriculum sample:
- Module 1 Primer: Primer on Touchstones for Leadership
Touchstones of Hope: Bachelor or Master of Social Work Course
Designed for Bachelor or Master of Social Work students, this course was written in accordance with School of Social Work accreditation standards by FNCFCS Executive Director Cindy Blackstock. The curriculum objectives are: 1) to familiarize social work students with the Touchstones and 2) to provide students with opportunities to actualize the principles in social work research, policy, practice and education.
Curriculum sample:
- Bachelor of Social Work: 3rd year Bachelor of Social Work or 1st year Master of Social Work Course Outline
If you are interested in finding out more about either of these educational opportunities please contact Cindy Blackstock, Executive Director of the First Nations Child and Family Caring Society of Canada at cblackst@fncfcs.com
